When researching vice presidential candidate and the Tim Walz campaign, one of the first things one might read is that he is a former teacher and football coach “from Mankato, Minnesota.”
Looking over Walz’s social media and web pages, he seems to be quite proud of his home state.
Of course, it doesn’t take long to find that he is actually a native of the state of Nebraska. This doesn’t seem to be a big deal at first. Many people settle down in cities and states other than their birthplaces. And many end up calling their new place “home.”
Recent news, however, shows that there may be more to the story than just a love of Minnesota. It is a story that a Tim Walz campaign lied about in 2006. But first, let’s go back to Walz’s Nebraska roots.
Walz Campaign Covered a DUI
In truth, Tim Walz had a DUI arrest in Nebraska that almost cost him that teaching and coaching career. What’s worse, is that the Tim Walz campaign lied about it. Walz, who was 31 at the time, not only ran from police at speeds of over 95 miles an hour in a 55 mile an hour zone. He blew a blood alcohol level of .128, which was way over the legal limit.
Of course, all of this happened years ago and was long forgotten until Walz first made a run for Congress in 2006. During that time, the Walz campaign repeatedly told the press that Walz was not drinking on the night in question. They claim this is why he was only charged with a misdemeanor. And now it seems that Walz’s campaign lied about the whole thing, from the DUI itself to how he got to the station to artillary deafness being the cause.
Walz Campaign Blamed the Trooper
The Walz campaign claimed that the reason for Walz’s failing of the field sobriety test was that he had “suffered hearing loss.” The claim was that he failed because of something that had happened to him while he was an artillery soldier in the National Guard. Campaign manager Kerry Greeley claimed that Walz was not drunk but misunderstood the trooper who pulled him over.
The campaign shifted blame to the trooper by stating that he “refused to speak up,” and added that “deaf people can have balance issues.” They also claimed that the judge “threw out” the DUI charges, and scolded the trooper for not being aware that Walz had hearing problems due to issues from artillary.
Walz Campaign Claimed He Drove to Station
The Tim Walz campaign also told the press that Walz drove to the police station after being pulled over by the police officer. Instead, a trooper delivered Walz to jail because he was too drunk to drive himself. That trooper recently did an interview with the Daily Beast. In it he revealed that hearing, or the loss thereof, had nothing at all to do with the sobriety test that was given to Walz. And it seems that there were quite a few discrepancies in the tale that the press was fed.
Walz Received Slap on the Wrist
At the time of the incident, Walz pled guilty to reckless driving, which was just a misdemeanor. His punishment? He lost his license for 90 days and had to pay a fine of just $200. He resigned from coaching the football team but was allowed to stay on as a teacher at Alliance High School in Dawes County Nebraska.
Within a year, he and his wife moved away from the Nebraska controversy and settled in Minnesota. There he worked as both a teacher and a coach for two decades at the Mankato West High School. And now, his new campaign wants you to believe their version of who Walz is. As for Walz, well, he wants to be your vice president. No wonder Kamala and her team don’t want to answer questions.
